The Bear Essentials
Wasgamuwa National Park, named after the Sinhala words 'Walas Gomurwa' meaning "Woods of the Bear", is one of Sri Lanka's most pristine and biodiverse protected areas. Located in the dry zone, it is bordered by the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, creating a lush sanctuary in an arid landscape.
While famous for its Elephants—including the unique 'Marsh Elephant'—it is perhaps best known for having one of the highest densities of Sloth Bears in the country. The park is less crowded than Yala or Udawalawe, allowing for a truly wild experience.
